Understanding ELEY Lubrication: Wax, Barrel Condition and Chamber Care

Every .22LR cartridge is lubricated, and the lubricant leaves a residue. Understanding what ELEY’s lubricant is for, why different ELEY products use different lubricants, and how to manage residue is the difference between a barrel that shoots consistently all season and one that surprises you halfway through a card.

What the Lubricant Is Actually For

The purpose of the lubricant applied to .22LR ammunition is to ease repeated chambering. That is its job.

There is a widespread belief that the wax is there to send the bullet down the barrel. It is a common misconception. The lubricant works at the point where the cartridge meets the chamber and the leade, protecting the bore and ensuring that the thousandth round of a session chambers exactly like the first.

ELEY applies its lubricant through a temperature-controlled lubrication system, which ensures there is a consistent chambering feel and consistent barrel protection round to round. Consistency of lubrication is itself a precision variable, and it is controlled as deliberately as propellant weight.

Four Lubricants, Chosen by Purpose

ELEY does not use one lubricant across the range. It uses four, each matched to the discipline the cartridge is built for.

Beeswax-tallow is used on the premium flat-nose competition products: ELEY tenex, ELEY match and ELEY team. Beeswax is a natural wax produced by honey bees, and blended with tallow it produces a softer, thicker and stickier lubricant than pure paraffin. That softness is precisely what delivers the accuracy, because it minimises the effects of chambering. It is why ELEY applies it to its highest-grade ammunition.

The characteristic that makes beeswax-tallow the best choice for precision also makes it the softest of the three, so it will pick up more lint and debris and will build up in the chamber a little more readily. This is a known and accepted trade-off at the top of the sport, where every competitor cleans to a schedule anyway.

Paraffin wax is a much thinner lubricant that remains harder than beeswax at any given temperature because of its higher melting point. It gives a drier feel and is less prone to picking up debris, and it does not clog a semi-automatic mechanism. ELEY uses it on ELEY club, ELEY sport and target, ELEY force, ELEY contact, ELEY tenex pistol, ELEY bullseye pistol x and both hollow-point hunting rounds.

EP2723 is used where ELEY’s engineers determined a third specification was required: ELEY tenex rapid fire pistol, ELEY ultra extreme long range, and both semi-auto benchrest products.

The biathlon lubricant is a scientifically engineered cold-weather formulation used on ELEY tenex biathlon and ELEY biathlon club, developed to enhance consistency, reduce barrel wear and maintain accuracy in freezing temperatures.

Practical Chamber and Barrel Care

Rimfire residue is a combination of lubricant, powder fouling and lead, and it accumulates fastest in the chamber and the first few inches of bore. Managing it is straightforward.

Clean to a schedule, not to a feeling. Establish a round count that suits your discipline and stick to it. Consistency of barrel condition is a precision variable in exactly the same way that consistency of ammunition is.

Pay attention to the chamber and the throat. This is where lubricant and carbon deposits concentrate, and where extraction effort will tell you first that a clean is due.

Fire fouling shots after cleaning. A barrel that has been stripped back to bare steel does not shoot the same as a settled one. Allow the bore to re-establish its condition before shooting for score.

Do not switch lubricant types mid-string. Moving from a beeswax product to a paraffin product, or the reverse, changes the bore condition. If you change product, re-settle the barrel before you judge the result.

Store ammunition clean and dry. ELEY’s enhanced packaging protects the cartridges in transit and storage. Loose rounds in a pocket collect exactly the lint and grit that a soft wax will hold onto.

Barrel Condition and Batch Testing

Barrel condition is one of the reasons batch testing is done through the shooter’s own barrel rather than a reference barrel. What performs flawlessly in one barrel may not deliver the same results in another, and a barrel’s condition, wear and cleaning regime are part of what defines it.

When ELEY tests at its batch testing centres, results are recorded through the shooter’s own barrel using electronic targets and bespoke ELEY software, so the lot selected is matched to the rifle as it is actually used.
