ELEY match is specified to a published velocity band of 317-330 m/s (1040-1085 ft/s), which places the competition range comfortably subsonic by design. If your chronograph is returning figures at or above the top of that band, the explanation is almost always the same one: the number printed on your box is a mean across four barrels, and your barrel produces its own figure. A fast barrel, a warm day, or both, will read higher than the box.

The Box Figure Is a Four-Barrel Mean
ELEY tests 200 rounds from every batch across four different firearm brands during proofing. The velocity printed on your box is the mean of those measurements. It is the final element of the batch code, the 1045 in a code reading 10 26-04 244 over 1045.
Averaging across four barrels of different manufacture is deliberate: a figure taken from one test gun would describe that gun as much as the ammunition. What it cannot do is predict your rifle, and it is not intended to. Barrel length, bore dimensions, chamber and throat condition all shift measured velocity. Two rifles firing the same batch on the same day will not return the same mean, and both readings are correct measurements of different things.
Temperature Moves Velocity
Ambient temperature is the other major variable. A batch chronographed on a warm summer range will not return the figure it produced on a cold winter one. That is why a velocity confirmed months earlier is worth re-checking before a match that matters, and why chronograph data should be recorded alongside the conditions it was gathered in.

Once you know your rifle reads faster than the box figure, batch selection becomes a straightforward exercise.
Use the box velocity as your selector. If you want a batch that will sit lower through your barrel, buy batches whose printed four-barrel mean sits lower in the band. The offset between the box figure and your barrel’s figure tends to be reasonably consistent for a given rifle, so once you have measured it on one batch you can predict the next.
