Why Is ELEY .22LR Ammunition So Expensive?
Because of what is done to every single cartridge before it leaves the factory, and what is done to every batch afterwards. An ELEY match-grade round is not a commodity .22LR sorted at the end of the line. It is manufactured under Six Sigma methodologies with the propellant charge measured electronically for each individual cartridge, primed in an air-conditioned facility, lubricated under temperature control, inspected electronically at high speed, and then proof tested with 200 rounds fired across four different firearm brands before it is allowed to carry a name. That cost is not in the materials. It is in the control.
It is also worth saying plainly that the ELEY range spans entry level to Olympic grade. Nobody has to buy ELEY tenex to shoot ELEY.
The Bullet
ELEY’s flat-nose profile is patented. As the projectile cuts through the air, the design pulls the centre of pressure forwards, aerodynamically stabilising the bullet and increasing accuracy at the target. It is used on ELEY tenex, ELEY match, ELEY team and ELEY tenex biathlon.
Manufacturing a bullet to that profile is only half the job. The heel is the base of the bullet, the last part of the projectile in contact with the case and the first surface the propellant gas acts on, and it is subjected to high-tech inspection of the critical heel area. Damage or asymmetry at the heel is one of the most direct causes of a flyer, and it cannot be corrected later.
The Case and the Propellant
The case mouth is trimmed flat, so that the bullet is always seated perfectly and squarely rather than at a slight angle inherited from an uneven mouth. ELEY match uses a cut mouth case; ELEY team uses precision-engineered trimmed case technology. The cartridge is then closed to exacting crimping standards to control round-to-round pull-out force. Inconsistent pull-out force means inconsistent initial pressure, which means inconsistent velocity, which means vertical dispersion on the target.
Propellant is measured electronically for each individual cartridge. Not sampled, not volumetrically dispensed and spot-checked, but measured per cartridge. It is the step that most directly buys velocity consistency.
The Priming
Priming is where ELEY’s heritage and its current cost structure meet. In 1979 ELEY developed ELEY prime, the world’s first and only automated dry priming system, and received the Queen’s Award for Technology in 1988 for its development.
Today priming takes place in an advanced air-conditioned priming facility, which delivers a 75% improvement in the spread of primer weights compared with other manufacturers. Primer weight spread governs ignition consistency. Ignition consistency governs velocity spread. Velocity spread governs vertical stringing at 50 m and beyond. An air-conditioned facility running an automated dry priming system is a capital-intensive way to make a very small part of a very small cartridge. It is also why the shots go where they do.
The Lubrication
ELEY runs a temperature-controlled lubrication system, ensuring consistent chambering and barrel protection. Lubricant is applied to ease repeated chambering; the idea that lubricant sends the bullet down the barrel is a common misconception. Because wax hardness varies with temperature, applying it under temperature control is what makes the tenth round of a string chamber like the first. ELEY also specifies a different lubricant for each job, from beeswax-tallow on tenex, match and team to a cold-engineered biathlon lubricant rated to -20°C.
The Testing: the Part Most Manufacturers Do Not Do
After manufacture, 200 rounds from every batch are fired across four different firearm brands to calculate Radial Standard Deviation (RSD). RSD measures the distance from each shot hole to the group’s centre point. Unlike extreme spread, which considers only the two furthest shots, RSD evaluates every shot fired.
