Start by Testing in Representative Conditions

Every barrel has its own unique dimensions and harmonic characteristics, and each batch of ammunition performs slightly differently. What performs flawlessly in one barrel may not deliver the same results in another. Add temperature to that and you have a combination that only measurement resolves, so make your testing look like your competition.

  • If your important matches are shot outdoors in winter, do your validation work in cold conditions rather than at a warm indoor range in July.
  • If you shoot indoors year-round at a stable temperature, seasonal batch selection is largely a non-issue for you.
  • Keep a diary. Record the full batch code, the date, the conditions and the result. Over a couple of seasons that record is worth more than any general rule.

The box velocity. The lower line of an ELEY batch code (the 1045 in the worked example 10 26-04 244 over 1045) is the mean velocity across four barrels during proofing. For Genuinely Freezing Conditions, Change the Product

There is a point at which the right answer stops being a different batch and becomes a different cartridge.

ELEY tenex biathlon is built on the tenex platform specifically for freezing conditions: a reduced cartridge diameter to aid cycling in bolt-action and straight-pull rifles, a scientifically designed cold-temperature lubricant with the box stating use to -20°C, and an increased propellant charge.
