What Do the Muzzle-Velocity Figures on ELEY Boxes Mean?
The number printed on the end panel of an ELEY box is the mean velocity of that specific batch, measured across four barrels during ELEY’s proofing process. It is not a nominal catalogue figure and it is not a prediction of what your rifle will produce. It is measured data from that batch.
Understanding the full code alongside it tells you more about the ammunition in your hand than any other information on the packaging.
How to Read an ELEY Batch Number
Every box of ELEY ammunition has a specific number code printed on the end panel. The code relates to the grade of the product, the manufacturing year, the loader on which it was produced, the batch number, and the average velocity of the ammunition across four barrels during the proofing process.
Taking a worked example of 10 26-04 244 printed above 1045:

The loader number matters more than shooters often realise. It identifies the specific machine on which the batch was produced, which is part of why two batches of the same product made in the same year can behave differently.
Why the Figure Is a Mean, Not a Guarantee
ELEY tests 200 rounds from every batch across four different firearm brands. The velocity figure printed on the box is the mean of that proofing data.
Using four different firearm brands is deliberate. A figure derived from one barrel would describe that barrel. Averaging across four provides a robust characterisation of the batch itself rather than of any single test gun.
Your own rifle will produce its own figure. Barrel length, bore dimensions, chamber tolerances, throat condition and ambient temperature all shift measured velocity. A chronograph reading from your rifle that differs from the box figure is normal and expected; both numbers are correct measurements of different things.

Is a Faster Batch Better Than a Slower One?
Not inherently. Velocity is one characteristic of a batch, and it is not the characteristic that determines accuracy.
What ELEY grades on is Radial Standard Deviation, which measures the distance from each shot hole to the group’s centre point, the mean point of impact. Every batch of ELEY tenex has met a maximum RSD of 3.75 mm regardless of where in the velocity band it falls.
What velocity does affect is the relationship between the batch and the transonic region. ELEY controls cartridge ballistics, including through the patented ELEY prime system, to reduce velocity variability, bullet dispersion and firearm recoil, and the flat-nose competition range is specified to stay comfortably subsonic. A projectile that transitions from supersonic to subsonic in flight can be destabilised, and that is the reason velocity is worth attending to.
The practical consequence is about matching, not maximising. Barrels have harmonic characteristics, and a barrel that shoots its tightest groups with a batch at one end of the velocity band will often prefer batches near the same figure. If a particular batch has performed well in your rifle, the box velocity is one of the most useful pieces of information you have for finding a comparable batch when that one runs out.
