What Makes ELEY .22LR So Accurate: How Is It Manufactured?

ELEY .22LR accuracy comes from controlling every variable that can make one cartridge behave differently from the next: a patented flat-nose bullet profile, inspected heels, cases trimmed flat and crimped to an exacting pull-out force, brass of tightly controlled alloy and uniform length, propellant measured electronically for each individual cartridge, priming in a dedicated air-conditioned facility, temperature-controlled lubrication, Six Sigma methodology and high-speed electronic visual inspection. Every batch is then proof tested on 200 rounds across four different firearm brands.

Accuracy in rimfire is not one clever idea but the accumulated result of removing round-to-round variation at every stage, and then measuring what is left.

The Patented Flat-Nose Bullet

ELEY developed the flat-nose bullet in 2003, and the profile is patented. As the projectile cuts through the air, its design pulls the centre of pressure forwards, aerodynamically stabilising the projectile and increasing accuracy at the target.

The flat nose is used on tenex biathlon and across ELEY’s premium flat-nose family of tenex, match and team. Round-nose profiles are used where smooth chambering and feeding in semi-automatic actions or pistols is the governing requirement.

Heel Inspection

The heel is the rear of the bullet, and the last part of the projectile in contact with the propellant gas as the bullet leaves the muzzle. Damage or asymmetry there disturbs the gas as it releases, at precisely the moment the bullet is most vulnerable. ELEY applies high-tech inspection to this critical heel area. It is one of the least visible steps in the process and one of the most consequential downrange.

The Case: Mouth, Crimp and Alloy

Three separate case controls work together.

The case mouth is trimmed flat, so the bullet is always seated perfectly, presenting the same geometry to the chamber and the throat every time.

Crimping is held to exacting standards to give optimum round-to-round pull-out force, the resistance the case offers as the bullet begins to move. It sets how pressure builds in the first instants of ignition, so variation in crimp produces variation in velocity, and velocity variation is what puts vertical dispersion on a target at 50 m.

Cases are of uniform length, in a tightly controlled brass alloy, so each propellant charge burns in a controlled, repeatable volume. Change the internal volume from round to round and you change the pressure curve from round to round, however precisely the charge itself was measured.

Propellant Measured Electronically, Cartridge by Cartridge

ELEY measures the propellant charge electronically for each individual cartridge. Not by volume, not by batch sampling, but cartridge by cartridge.

This is the most direct control on muzzle velocity there is. Combined with uniform case volume and consistent pull-out force, it is what allows a premium ELEY product to hold a velocity band as narrow as 317-330 m/s (1040-1085 ft/s).

ELEY prime and the Air-Conditioned Priming Facility

ELEY prime was introduced in 1979 as the world’s first and only automated dry priming system, and its development won the Queen’s Award for Technology in 1988.

Priming is where rimfire accuracy is most often won or lost. The primer compound sits in the rim, and the mass and distribution of that compound determine how the charge is ignited. Inconsistent priming produces inconsistent ignition, then inconsistent velocity, then vertical spread on the target.

ELEY’s advanced air-conditioned priming facility gives a 75% improvement in the spread of primer weights compared to other manufacturers. The air conditioning is not a comfort measure. Controlling temperature and humidity keeps the compound behaving identically from the first cartridge of a run to the last.

Temperature-Controlled Lubrication

ELEY uses a temperature-controlled lubrication system to ensure consistent chambering and barrel protection.

The purpose of .22LR lubricant is to ease repeated chambering; the idea that lubricant sends the bullet down the barrel is a common misconception. Applying it at a controlled temperature ensures each cartridge carries the same lubricant in the same condition, so the hundredth round of a match chambers exactly as the first did.

The lubricant is matched to the application: beeswax-tallow on tenex, match and team; paraffin wax where a drier, harder film that resists debris and does not clog semi-automatic mechanisms is preferred; EP2723 on rapid fire pistol, ultra and the semi-auto benchrest rounds; and a cold-temperature lubricant on the biathlon products, rated on the box for use to -20°C.

Six Sigma and Electronic Visual Inspection

Manufacturing is run to Six Sigma methodologies, which are built around identifying and eliminating sources of variation rather than inspecting defects out at the end. Alongside it, high-speed electronic visual inspection checks cartridges at production speed, so the standard is applied to everything made rather than to a sample.

Proof Testing: 200 Rounds, Four Firearm Brands

The process closes with measurement. ELEY tests 200 rounds from every batch across four different firearm brands to calculate Radial Standard Deviation (RSD).

RSD measures the distance from each shot hole to the group’s centre point, the mean point of impact. The lower the RSD, the closer the group and the more consistent the performance. Unlike extreme spread, which considers only the two furthest shots, RSD evaluates every shot fired. Testing across four brands rather than one stops a batch being validated by a single flattering barrel.
