Will ELEY tenex or match Work in a Semi-Automatic Rifle?
ELEY tenex and ELEY match are flat-nose cartridges engineered for precision bolt-action target rifles shooting at 50 m. For semi-automatic rifles, ELEY recommends round-nose products, and manufactures a dedicated semi-automatic range built specifically for autoloading actions: ELEY force, ELEY contact, ELEY semi-auto benchrest precision and ELEY semi-auto benchrest outlaw.
If you own a semi-automatic rifle and want ELEY’s best work in it, the answer is not to reach for the bolt-action cartridge. It is to reach for the cartridge ELEY engineered for your action.
What tenex and match Were Built to Do
ELEY tenex carries a maximum Radial Standard Deviation (RSD) of 3.75 mm, the tightest published accuracy standard in the range, and ELEY match follows at 4.74 mm. Both use the patented flat-nose bullet ELEY developed in 2003, which pulls the centre of pressure forwards as the projectile cuts through the air, aerodynamically stabilising it and increasing accuracy at the target.
Both are lubricated with beeswax-tallow: a softer, thicker, stickier wax formulated to minimise the effects of chambering in a rifle where the shooter loads each round by hand.
That combination is why ELEY’s discipline guidance points to tenex for ISSF and Olympic smallbore rifle, 50 m prone and three-position, ARA Unlimited, WRABF, IR 50/50, PSL and UKBR22, with match as the alternative in several of those classes. ELEY ammunition has won 140 Olympic medals since 1964.
What a Semi-Automatic Action Needs Instead
A semi-automatic rifle strips each cartridge from a magazine and drives it into the chamber under spring pressure, at speed, without the shooter guiding it. It then cycles a mechanism that accumulates residue over hundreds of rounds.
That asks for two things from the cartridge. First, a round-nose profile, which presents a smooth curved surface to the feed ramp and chamber mouth and enhances smooth chambering through an autoloading action. Second, a lubricant that stays dry rather than sticky: paraffin wax is thinner and harder at any given temperature because it has a higher melting point, which gives it a drier feel and makes it less prone to picking up debris. Crucially, it does not clog semi-automatic mechanisms. ELEY’s semi-auto benchrest cartridges use EP2723, the specification also applied to ELEY’s rapid fire pistol and long-range rounds.

You Are Not Giving Up Accuracy
The important point for a target shooter moving to a semi-automatic is that ELEY’s round-nose range is not a compromise range.
ELEY semi-auto benchrest precision was developed using the same engineering expertise that drives ELEY tenex, and its maximum RSD of 4.90 mm is a tighter published standard than ELEY team at 5.50 mm. It is made on the same production process: propellant measured electronically for every individual cartridge, case mouths trimmed flat, exacting crimping standards, high-tech heel inspection, and priming from ELEY’s air-conditioned facility, which achieves a 75 per cent improvement in the spread of primer weights compared with other manufacturers.
Every one of those batches is tested the same way too, with 200 rounds fired across four different firearm brands to calculate RSD.
The Bottom Line
ELEY tenex and ELEY match are flat-nose cartridges engineered for precision bolt-action target rifles at 50 m. For a semi-automatic rifle, use ELEY’s round-nose products: semi-auto benchrest precision or outlaw for benchrest, force for cycling and power, contact for subsonic shooting, club or sport / target for volume.
