The reason is straightforward. Every barrel has its own unique characteristics, and each batch of ammunition performs differently. What performs flawlessly in one barrel may not deliver the same results in another. Batch variation is not a defect to be concealed. It is a physical reality that the world’s best shooters manage deliberately.
ELEY’s Grading System Is Built on Batch Measurement
ELEY tenex, ELEY match and ELEY team are manufactured on the same production line using the same flat-nose bullet, cartridge case, primer, propellant and lubrication. Every production batch is then statistically tested, and the batches are separated by measured performance.
The highest-performing lots become ELEY tenex, followed by ELEY match and ELEY team. The same principle applies to the round-nose range, where the highest-performing lots become ELEY club and the remainder become ELEY sport, marketed as ELEY target in some regions.
This means the published Radial Standard Deviation (RSD) figure is a guaranteed ceiling for every batch in that grade.

How Every Batch Is Measured
ELEY tests 200 rounds from every batch across four different firearm brands to calculate Radial Standard Deviation. RSD measures the distance from each shot hole to the group’s centre point, the mean point of impact. The lower the RSD, the closer the group and the more consistent the performance.
Testing across four different firearm brands rather than one is what makes the figure meaningful. A batch that performed well in a single reference barrel would tell you about that barrel. A batch characterised across four platforms tells you about the ammunition.

What Drives the Remaining Variation
Manufacturing controls at ELEY are extensive. Cartridge cases of uniform length are formed from a tightly controlled brass alloy, so each propellant charge burns in a controlled volume. Propellant quantity is measured electronically for each individual cartridge. Priming is carried out in an advanced air-conditioned priming facility that delivers a 75 per cent improvement in the spread of primer weights compared with other manufacturers. Lubrication is applied through a temperature-controlled system. Every bullet passes computer-controlled visual inspection, including high-tech inspection of the critical heel area. Six Sigma methodologies govern the process throughout.
ELEY also manufactures its match-grade ammunition in small lot quantities specifically to give a greater level of control over the manufacturing process. One batch of tenex takes upwards of 15 days from raw material to packaging.

How to Manage Batch Variation
Test batches through your own barrel. ELEY’s test ranges in the United Kingdom, Hungary, Germany, the United States and Canada allow shooters to evaluate up to 20 batches. Ten shots are fired from each, the best-performing batches are shortlisted, and a further 30 shots produce an overall 40-shot group size and consolidated score for each.

Retest as the barrel changes. A barrel is not a fixed object. Throat condition and wear evolve over a season, and the batch that suited it at the start may not be the batch that suits it later.

Grade Versus Batch
