Why Is My ELEY subsonic Still Noisy Through a Moderator?

A moderated rimfire rifle makes noise from three separate sources, and a moderator only addresses one of them. It captures and slows the muzzle report: the blast of propellant gas leaving the barrel. It has no effect on the sound the action makes as it cycles, and none on the noise the bullet makes in flight downrange. When a subsonic round still sounds louder than expected, what you are hearing is almost always one of the two the moderator was never built to touch. Once you know which of the three you are listening to, it becomes straightforward to manage.

The Three Sources of Noise

Muzzle report. This is the moderator’s job, and the part of the equation the ammunition’s velocity band influences most directly. Mechanical action noise. The bolt, hammer, firing pin and extractor all make noise, and in a semi-automatic so does the whole reciprocating cycle. Bullet flight noise. A bullet makes noise on its way to the target and makes noise on impact. None of it happens at the muzzle, so none of it is within the moderator’s reach. Impact on a steel plate, a backstop or hard ground can easily be the loudest thing a bystander hears.

What to Check, in Order

Confirm you are shooting a subsonic product. Check the velocity figure for your batch. The four-digit number in the batch code on your packaging is the mean velocity for that batch, measured across four barrels during proofing. A batch nearer the bottom of its product’s published band carries more margin below the sound barrier than one nearer the top.

Listen for where the noise is coming from. Have someone else fire the rifle while you stand a few metres to the side. Muzzle report, action noise and downrange impact are easy to tell apart from outside the shooting position and almost impossible to separate from behind the rifle.

Consider the action type. If quietness is the overriding priority, a manually cycled action removes the mechanical noise a self-loading cycle produces. If a semi-automatic is what you are shooting, ELEY contact is the round engineered for exactly that combination.
