Is ELEY or Lapua more accurate?
Neither ELEY nor Lapua is universally more accurate. The highest level of rimfire accuracy is achieved through the Triangle of Success: the right ammunition, the right firearm and the shooter’s ability to consistently execute every shot. The most accurate .22LR is therefore not the name printed on the box, but the production lot that performs best in your rifle.
Both ELEY and Lapua manufacture ammunition capable of winning Olympic, World Championship and international competitions. Every rifle barrel has unique dimensions and harmonic characteristics, every production lot performs slightly differently, and every shooter introduces their own level of consistency. Elite competitors therefore evaluate multiple production lots before selecting the ammunition they will use in competition.
Why there is no universal winner
Accuracy is influenced by barrel dimensions, chamber tolerances, barrel harmonics, ammunition consistency and shooter technique. No manufacturer can guarantee that a particular production lot will be the most accurate in every rifle.
How ELEY grades competition ammunition
ELEY uses two graded product families together with a number of specialist purpose-designed products.
The flat-nose competition range
ELEY tenex, ELEY match and ELEY team are manufactured on the same production line using the same flat-nose bullet, cartridge case, primer, propellant and lubrication. After manufacture every production batch is statistically tested. The highest-performing production lots become ELEY tenex and are packaged in the iconic red box. The next highest-performing lots become ELEY match, followed by ELEY team.
The round-nose competition range
ELEY club and ELEY sport begin life as the same round-nose cartridge. Following factory testing, the highest-performing lots become ELEY club, while the remaining production lots become ELEY sport. In the United States, ELEY target is the same product as ELEY sport but branded specifically for that market.
Specialist products
Products including ultra, force, contact, biathlon, hunting, benchrest and pistol cartridges are individually engineered for their intended disciplines rather than graded from a common production stream.
How ELEY measures accuracy
Every production batch is evaluated under controlled conditions using a statistically significant testing methodology. Performance is assessed using Radial Standard Deviation (RSD), Mean Point of Impact (MPI), velocity consistency, group size and statistical repeatability. ELEY evaluates 200 rounds from every production batch across four different rifle platforms to provide a robust assessment of accuracy before grading the ammunition.
| Competition product | Maximum RSD |
|---|---|
| ELEY tenex | 3.75 mm |
| ELEY match | 4.74 mm |
| ELEY team | 5.50 mm |
What is Radial Standard Deviation (RSD)?
Radial Standard Deviation measures the distance of every shot from the Mean Point of Impact. Unlike extreme spread, which only considers the two furthest shots, RSD evaluates every shot fired and provides a statistically robust measure of ammunition consistency. Lower RSD values indicate tighter shot dispersion and greater consistency.

Should you choose ELEY or Lapua?
Choose the production lot that delivers the best statistical performance in your rifle. Brand is only one part of the Triangle of Success. The combination of shooter, firearm and ammunition ultimately determines accuracy.
The bottom line
The question is not whether ELEY or Lapua is more accurate. The better question is which production lot performs best in your rifle. ELEY’s grading philosophy provides additional confidence because every batch of ELEY tenex has already demonstrated the highest measured accuracy achieved during factory testing before earning its place in the iconic red box.
