Why a Pistol Needs a Round Nose

The flat nose is ELEY’s signature rifle technology. As the projectile cuts through the air, the design pulls the centre of pressure forwards, aerodynamically stabilising the projectile and increasing accuracy at the target. Over 50 m from a rifle barrel, that is exactly what you want.

A pistol asks a different question first: can the cartridge get into the chamber, every time, at speed? A target pistol has one of the shortest and most abrupt feed paths in any firearm, and a semi-automatic more than most. The slide strips a round from the magazine and drives it nose-first up a ramp into the chamber in a fraction of a second, repeatedly, under recoil. A round-nose profile presents a smooth, curved leading surface to that ramp and to the chamber mouth, so the cartridge is guided in rather than caught. A flat leading edge, however good it is aerodynamically, is the wrong shape for that journey. Why a Pistol Needs a Lower Velocity Band

A pistol is held, not supported. It has a short barrel, a light reciprocating mass and no bipod, sling or shoulder to absorb what the cartridge does when it fires. Everything the round produces goes back into the shooter’s hand and wrist, and the score depends on how quickly and how consistently the sights return to the aiming mark.

ELEY loads its pistol cartridges into a lower band accordingly. Lower velocity in a pistol also has a mechanical purpose. A self-loading target pistol is a tuned system: the load has to deliver enough energy to cycle the action reliably while producing a recoil impulse the shooter can shoot through without the pistol climbing away from the target. That is a narrower window than a rifle cartridge has to hit.

Why the Alloy and the Lubricant Change Too

The lead alloy is the least visible difference and one of the most consequential. In a pistol, the bullet is driven nose-first against steel on every shot before it is ever fired. The purpose of lubricant in all cases is to ease repeated chambering, not to send the bullet down the barrel as is commonly assumed.

Why the Accuracy Standards Differ

RSD measures the distance from each shot hole to the group’s centre point, the mean point of impact. Unlike extreme spread, which considers only the two furthest shots, RSD evaluates every shot fired, and ELEY tests 200 rounds from every batch across four different firearm brands to calculate it.

Rifle tenex is held to 3.75 mm and tenex pistol to 4.40 mm. That is not a quality gap; it reflects two cartridges optimised for two different jobs.
