It has been confirmed that India will host the shooting events for the 2022 Commonwealth Games. This will take place six months before the main event in Birmingham.

Approved on Monday by the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), all shooting competitions will be held in Chandigarh, the capital of the northern Indian states of Punjab and Haryana. It is scheduled to be staged in January 2022. The main Birmingham Commonwealth Games event is due to begin later that year 27th July – 8th August 2022.

The CFG has also confirmed that after the closing ceremony it would issue a medal table including the Chandigarh results. This will act “as a further and final legitimate ranking of competing nations and territories from the respective competitions”.

Following the update, the president of the CGF, Dame Louise Martin commented. “I am delighted that we have approved India’s ambitious proposal to host a Commonwealth Shooting Championships in Chandigarh during 2022.

“Athletes now have an unprecedented opportunity to compete in an elite event that will showcase the very best of Commonwealth Sport.”

The proposal for India to host occurred after the country threatened to boycott the Games following shootings omission from the 2022 schedule. India has an excellent record in shooting having won 16 medals at the last Games in 2018.
